(Rough) Review of DHCP Server Web / GUI tools

This is a very rough review based solely on screenshots and documentation from the Debian help site.
The functionalities that we’re looking for are the following:

  • Ease of use for helpdesk and end-user
  • Check for existing DHCP leases
  • Release / Renew existing DHCP leases

Sauron
From the site:

Sauron is a scalable system for management of DNS & DHCP services. Sauron is freely distributable under the GNU General Public License (GPL) and includes the following major features:

  • Able to manage DNS & DHCP services for multiple servers (enterprises).
  • Dynamically generates complete DNS & DHCP configurations from a central SQL-database.
  • Automatic generation of DNS “reverse” zones, with support for smaller than C-class reverse delegations.
  • Web interface with user & group based access controls.
  • Command-line interface for administrators.

Comments:

  • As of the manual page found here, majority of the functionalities is done through CLI (which isn’t what we’re looking for)
  • There’s very little movement over at its mailing list and I’ve seen a couple of questions unanswered. Pretty difficult to look for support should this be deployed in a corporate environment.
  • UI wise, it could be better. (Though that’s easily editable, but that is some extra more work with the CSS.)
  • Functionality wise, it has the search host but I’m not sure if it has the release/renew clients. At least, I could not find the said functionality in the documentation and/or screenshots.

Comments:

  • Last update to the project was in 2006 (4 years ago!), the forums are down and there are no other details about functionality so definitely not this one.

dhcptool

Comments:

  • Last update to the project was in 2002. I think this project is dead.

WebDHCP

Comments:

  • Last update to the project was in 2001. I think this project is also dead.
  • But the screenshots looks like this is the simplest we could have.

Maintain

Maintain is a multi-user, web based management tool for DNS and DHCP. Maintain is entirely written using PHP and a MySQL database backend.

Comments:

  • A demo page is always good. :3
  • However, it seems like Maintain leans more towards DNS management rather than DHCP as I can’t find a straightforward approach in maintaining DHCP leases in the demo.
  • The project has very good documentation but the forums are a bit dormant. Latest post was 7 weeks ago (at the time of this writing) there was no reply.

WebDhcpDns

Comments:

  • The screenshots are in French (and I reckon the default installation is also in French)
  • There’s no documentation to speak of, though judging from the screenshots, it may be what we need.

DHCPDman

Comments:

  • Though this is not web-based, looks like our best bet on what we’re looking for.  We may have some trouble with remote administration though.
  • The only other caveat is that the last update to this project was in 2004 and though the software looks mature, lack of support and security updates makes it a bit uneasy to use.

Anyone have any suggestion for any GUI/Web-based DHCP management tool?

  1. I’m stock with searching web tool for dhcp. Reviewed Sauron (powerfull program but I did stock with configuration issues), phpdhcpadmin (poor documentation). The best of the tools that could be found was webmin. But beyond facilitated the dhcp server configuration, offer poor server management capabilities. I will continue to seek suitable tool.

  2. Sadly, that’s more or less the same path I’ve followed when I was looking for a DHCP management suite. It’s unbelievable that there’s nothing!
